ANGELIQUE KIDJO: Oyo.The Grammy Awards are just a few weeks away, so I thought it was high time we take an in-depth look at some of this year’s candidates in the world music categoriesOyo, the 2010 release by Beninese diva Angelique Kidjo, is nominated in the “Best Contemporary World Music” category, alongside albums from Bebel Gilberto, Bela Fleck, Sergio Mendes, and Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon, and it’s a strong contender. Featuring a slate of Kidjo’s favorite songs from across many genres and many years, it’s a slightly scattered but ultimately pretty great record, and my favorite album that she’s released in several years.
