WeAreTheWorld*1985

WE ARE THE WORLD

On January 28, 1985, forty-five of the biggest names in popular music came together to record a song in response to the tragic famine that was wreaking havoc in Africa at the time. “We Are The World” is about a dream that became a song and then an event and finally a worldwide movement by artists and fans to be involved in making a positive difference in the world.

Inspired by activist Harry Belafonte and producer / manager Ken Kragen, crafted by songwriters Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, with mega producer Quincy Jones conducting and producing, and performed by music’s superstars, “We Are The World” came to life. The song speaks simply and poignantly to the unity of humankind and the need for each of us to lend a hand to make a better tomorrow.

Released in March, 1985, “We Are The World” was an instant hit topping music charts worldwide. It became one of the fastest selling American pop singles in history, was the first single to be certified multi-platinum, and won multiple music industry awards including three Grammys.

United Support of Artists for Africa (USA for Africa) is the charity which emerged from the song and the movement. Since the release of “We Are The World” 25 years ago, the organization has raised over $63 Million for humanitarian causes which assist Africa and Africans with challenges that plague the continent, as well as for Africa focused programs based around the world.

A song that inspired a lasting legacy…the world’s anthem…We Are The World.
